For Bloggin's Sake

I once dreamed of being a great writer. Now I dream of being a better reader. After years of writing, I have come to the realization that most things worth reading have already been written by far better writers. It is through my writing that, I hope to better understant those writers. To connect with art is to appreciate art.

Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, "There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion; that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till. The power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do nor does he know until he has tried."

What I think Emerson is trying to say is that we must focus on ourselves and not others. To understand the world we must work on ourselves and constantly self improve. I like to think of it as self-evolution. So I am going to use this blog to learn more about myself by examining the nourising writing of others. I hope to read something interesting each week and write about it on this blog.

The reason I chose to write a blog, instead of a journal, is to give my thoughts some transparancy. The idea that someone in the far distant land of cyberspace might find this lonely blog will keep me honest. If you do happen upon this blog, feel free to comment, but please do not preach.
